Kingston remained undiscovered for decades, but as more and more people are looking to escape the bustle of city life the permanent population of the area is growing. Usually home to about 200 residents, in the peak season more than 1000 people enjoy the carefree country lifestyle and its relative close proximity to major shopping centres in Queenstown and the Remarkables Park Shopping Mall. At the moment Kingston itself has a local store for grocery items, a café and restaurant, a petrol station and garage workshop and a fashion boutique.
One of Kingston’s main attractions is the Kingston Flyer – a train that used to be the main transport method in and out of Queenstown. Right up until 1950 people used to travel on the train from Gore to Kingston and then take the ferry to Queenstown and Glenorchy. It is a favoured treat for train enthusiasts as it is still operational today.
